A Letter from Gedling Colliery Cricket Club
September 6, 2011
Dear Cricketers, Captains and Contacts,
Those of you who may know I play cricket on Mapperley Top for Gedling Colliery Cricket Club. Gedling Borough Council have recently announced plans to build 1,900 houses, a supermarket and business park on the picturesque golf course that surrounds ¾ of the ground. Not only is this going to spoil the views across Gedling and the Belvoir Valley that have been enjoyed by visitors and members at the club and golf course for the 106 years the cricket club have been there, but it may well be the start of the end for the club.
We all experience occasional problems with the odd property adjacent to our grounds as a result of occasional cricket balls landing in gardens or roofs. I know. You move next to a cricket club and you get balls hitting the roof once in a while. Who’d have thought it! Still with the proposed houses surrounding our the ground the Health and Safety crazies may well bring about the closure of the club – it’s happened elsewhere in the country to clubs older than ours!!!
Please sign this petition to protest against the development plans to save not only the golf course, but our cricket club too!
