Results for Weekend of 1st/2nd May
May 4, 2010
Last weekend saw a full schedule of matches of the season with all five senior teams in action for the first time.
1st XI v Gedling Colliery (away) – SNCL Division A
All the talk and winter preparation was put to the test at Plains Road where the 1st XI begun their assault in Division A. Winning the toss, Gedling asked Plumtree to bat first on a day that threatened showers but never delivered. Chris Mortimer and Jamesy opened up but Chris soon fell to the wayward opener but not before he had smashed him for a massive six, straight onto the 7th fairway. Steve James (59) and Tewy (63) then established an excellent 2nd wicket partnership of 107. The momentum was continued by Nige Finney, Ben Thompson and Brad Evans to enable Plumtree to close on 242 for 9 after their 48 overs.
In response, Bobby Gamble nipped out the experienced Graham Burton early on but the Gedling side also rebuilt well and at the halfway point of their innings, they were well placed on 88 for 2. Solid bowling performances from skipper Scott Bailey (3-22) and Nigel (7-4-6-3) strangled the innings and they finished on 169 for 8. This secured an opening match 17 points, a good start in anyone’s books. The full details of this game can be found by clicking here – this includes innings details and wagon wheels for all batsmen.
2nd XI v Clifton Village (away) – SNCL Division B
In a quirk of the fixture computer, the 2nd XI were also away at Clifton Village in what should be one of their tougher games of the season. Tappy won the toss and decided to bowl first and his side did well to restrict the home team to 216 for 7. The leading bowling figures were provided by Pesto Milnes (3-51) and PK (3-30). In response, Plumtree were struggling on 47-4 but Charlie Kingsbury found some early season form with a fluent 58. In a very close finish, the home side clinched a winning draw when we ended up 3 runs short on 213 for 8 with key contributions from Robbie Smith (42) and Dave Sumner (41). Dave’s efforts were particularly noticeable in that they came off only 30 balls.

3rd XI v Thurgaton (away) – SNCL Division L
The biggest win of the weekend came from Phil Garner’s 3rd XI who beat Thurgaton by 115 runs; Will Johnson led the charge with 61 aided by Chalky White (41) and Mark Oldham (48*) to secure a first innings total of 187 for 3 from 40 overs. When Thurgaton batted, they were bowled out for 72 in just 30 overs with Jack Manton and Khpalwak Marjan taking three wickets a piece with Natty and Chalky forming a demon, wrist twirling partnership with two wickets each.
Sunday 1st XI v Balderton (away) – Newark Alliance Division 1
One of the longest trips for the Sunday 1st XI ended with the trousering of 4 win points and the unearthing of an unlikely off-spin hero. The home side won the toss and chose to bat first and were restricted to 135 for 9 from their 40 overs. Matt Snelgrove, Alex Sheriston and Tappy each took a wicket but Brad Evans, erstwhile angry fast bowler, turned in a staggering match-spoiling performance with figures 7-3-5-6.
Plumtree notched up a 6 wicket win in 32 overs with Chalky leading the way with 56.

Sunday 2nd XI v Balderton (home) – Newark Alliance Division 4
After successive promotions, it was always going to be interesting to see how PK’s Mighty Warriors would fare at this level but on Saturday’s evidence, they will compete in division 4. PK won the toss and chose to bat although we weren’t sure he’d come back to the pavilion if he’d lost it; it was that cold that if he had said he was going out for a while, no-one would have been surprised.
Plumtree racked up a competitive 173 for 8 from 40 overs with Chris Kerrison (47), Tewy (36) and the returning Tom Amos (22) contributing. A cameo of 16 from 17 balls from Benters, stepping out from behind the beer taps, caught the eye along with Immers impression of an ice-sculpture whilst umpiring.
When Balderton batted, they were looking set for a victory but two wickets each for Junior Kerro, PK and Tewy and one from Natty ensured that they ended up 7 runs short of their target. A full scorecard and other details of this match can be found by clicking here.
