May 30, 2010
Having looked out of the window on Saturday morning and seen the weather had returned to slate grey sides and rain, it was a positive outcome that two of the three scheduled matches for Saturday being completed; the 3rd XI game v Belton was the only one to be cancelled.
At the PCG, the 1st XI were looking for a positive result to follow up last week’s win at Belvoir; the opponents this week were HG Carrington Cavaliers and the upward trend continued by securing a 17 point winning draw. Batting first, Plumtree recorded an opening wicket stand of 210 between Steve James, who continued his superb start to the season with 134 and Ben Thompson with 83. The final total at the end of the 36 over innings was an impressive 271 for 3.
In reply, Hyson Green could only muster 190 for 7 with skipper Scott Bailey taking 4-71.
The 2nd XI travelled to Radcliffe on Trent looking to continue their recent improvement in form and did so spledidly by returning to the PCG with 20 points; Tappy’s boys went to tea at 169 for 7 from their innings shortened to 30 overs with Paul White top-scoring on 70. They then bowled Radcliffe out for 157 in the 30th over after the home side had collapsed from 114-2, with Alamgir Khan starring with 6-47.
The weather on Sunday was a little better but didn’t prevent the Sunday 1st XI’s game away at Bracebridge Heath from being reduced to 35 per side; new skipper Brad Evans won the toss and chose to bat first; he will have only reasonably satisfied with the total of 177 for 5 at half time with Hassan Azad top-scoring with 79, Brad himself got 41 and Jimmy Gamble 37. In reply, Bracebridge managed to overcome that total in just short of 31 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. Jimmy Gamble not keeping was allowed on to bowl and returned the best Plumtree figures of the day with 2-25.
Another fine win for Kelly’s Heroes at the PCG leaves them with 5 wins out of five and top of division 4. Claypole won the toss and batted first but some excellent bolwing restricted them to a gettable 174 for 8 from their 40 overs. Ben Gathercole recorded the best figures of the day with 4-14 from 8 overs and he was well supported by Sam Storey, Natty Sikand-Youngs and Stanley Carter. In response, a nine wicket walloping was delivered by Sam Storey (90*) and Kwesi Spencer (50) with more than 6 overs to spare.
