Cavaliers Run Close in Twenty 20 Cup
June 24, 2009
Sunday morning cricket is usually reserved for the pro’s playing in a Test Match but the Plumtree 1st XI experienced a 10.30 AM start last Sunday when they took on reigning cup holders West Indian Cavaliers in the first round of the ECB Cockspur Twenty 20 Cup. This was held at The PCG which also hosted a subsequent game between Farnsfield and Wollaton and a final between the two winners.
The early start obviously did not agree with Cavs either as tight bowling from Plumtree restricted them to a 20 over total of 109 for 9 from 20 overs. This was a very good bowling and fielding performance led by Jurgen Charlesworth (3-16), Dallas Coull (2-11) and Darren Wright (2-20).
A good response followed with key contributions from Dallas (26) and Darren (18) meant that Plumtree reached the final ball of the innings needing one run to win. Unfortunately, Jurgen drove the ball to mid on to be caught by Cavs’ skipper Ricky Anderson to give the Cavs a one run win.
In the second match, Wollaton easily overcame Farnsfield to set up a final with Cavaliers who they beat in a close fought final.
The whole day was a solid success for Plumtree as a host club and thanks must go to everyone who contributed to the success of the event especially car park meisters Oggy Oldham and Simmo, front of house man Benters and chef Dallas ‘tired and emotional’ Coull.
